Edge computing plays a key role in the practical implementation: data is processed and analysed in real time at the edge of the network – exactly where it is generated. This decentralised data processing significantly reduces the amount of data that is actually sent to the core (private and public cloud), thus minimising response times.

CORE

In the core (private and public cloud), data passed through the edge nodes and aggregated from multiple sources is centrally stored, processed and made available. This provides the highest level of agility, scalability and responsiveness.

EDGE

Edge nodes or edge gateways serve as hubs between IoT devices and the core. They intelligently analyze and filter the data generated by IoT devices in advance and in real time (edge analytics) so that only the most relevant data migrates to the core, i.e., the private or public cloud. This significantly reduces the amount of data at the edge. In addition, analytics and local applications, such as a machine dashboard, can be run at the edge.

DATA SOURCES

The number of possible data sources is increasing, primarily due to the growing number of connected devices (IoT). For example, IoT devices such as sensors, mobile devices, machines or even barcode scanners produce data continuously and sometimes in real time – data that is often business-critical and therefore particularly worth protecting. For example, sensors measure environmental values such as speed, rotation, force, light, position, climate or acoustics. New sensors can be added to existing machines, eliminating the need to retrofit new machines.
