TSM or IBM Spectrum Protect, one of the four leading solutions for enterprise-wide data backup and recovery, does not have any automatisms or ready-made functions to compensate for the failure of a tape library. This gap is closed by the library failover solution ‘cLibmaint’ developed by us.

It enables the TSM administrator to easily react to and compensate for the planned or unplanned failure of a library. The prerequisite is that a second tape library – preferably in a second data center – is available. All scheduled backup jobs continue to be executed with the help of this second library. Data can be restored at any time.

This function is important, for example, for backing up SAP or database logs. If a database is unable to back up its logs, it must cease operations in order to continue to ensure data integrity. As a result, important applications, such as SAP, would also stop working, potentially causing damage to the company.

In addition, ‘cLibmaint’ provides menu-driven recovery functions to resynchronize the data after the failed library is back online. To provide these functions, ‘cLibmaint’ reconfigures all settings concerning the library ‘on-the-fly’ within the TSM server.

Optimal is the use of ‘clibmaint’ in combination with cluster solutions based on IBM TS7650G virtual tape libraries or EMC Isilon / IBM ESS backends. In combination with these solutions, ‘cLibmaint’ leads to a significantly higher operational reliability as well as simplifications in maintenance and failure scenarios.
